Offboarding
Offboarding is the set of steps taken when a person leaves a role, including removing access, collecting company property and handing off unfinished work.
Offboarding is the exit side of onboarding. When a team member or assistant leaves, you remove their access to email, files and software, change shared passwords and record where each task stands. You also thank them and ask for any notes that help the next person.
For a small business, a missed step can be costly. A former worker with active logins is a risk to your data. A task nobody owns can slip. A short checklist, written once, makes every exit calm and safe. Pair it with a non-disclosure agreement that continues after the work ends.
Our guide to giving a virtual assistant access safely helps you plan access from the start, so offboarding is simple. Run the same checklist every time so no step depends on memory.
