Prompt engineering
Prompt engineering is the practice of writing clear, specific instructions for an AI tool so that it returns useful and accurate results.
Prompt engineering means choosing your words so an AI tool understands the task. A good prompt states the goal, gives context, names the format you want and includes an example. Vague prompts tend to produce vague answers.
For a small business owner, the skill is practical. A clear prompt can save minutes on drafts, summaries and checklists. Still, AI output can be wrong, so a person should check it before it goes to a customer. Treat the tool as a fast first draft, not a final authority.
Writing prompts uses the same habits as delegation and a good standard operating procedure: clear goals and clear steps. Compare tools and people on our AI vs virtual assistant page. Keep a short list of prompts that work well so the whole team can reuse them.
