# U.S.-Based vs Offshore Virtual Assistants: What You Trade

Peachtree VAPublished October 1, 20264 min read

The short answer

A U.S.-based virtual assistant costs more per hour but works your business hours, speaks your market's English and falls under U.S. law. Offshore assistants often cost far less and can cover odd hours. The better choice depends on how much client contact, judgment and time-zone overlap the work needs.

## Is a U.S.-based or offshore virtual assistant the better choice?

Neither wins every time. A U.S.-based assistant costs more per hour but overlaps your working day and handles client contact in your market. An offshore assistant costs much less and suits clear, repeatable tasks. Match the choice to the work, not to a rule.

We sell U.S.-based assistants, so weigh our view with that in mind. This post lists where offshore does better. Vendors on both sides have a reason to sell you one answer.

## How much cheaper is offshore?

Offshore help is much cheaper per hour. Wing Assistant lists worldwide part-time assistants at $699 a month for 80 hours, about $8.74 an hour. Published U.S. plans at Time Etc run from $36 to $39 an hour. Both figures are published prices as of October 2026.

The gap can shrink in practice. Count the hours you spend explaining tasks, fixing output and waiting for replies across time zones. If you spend five hours a month managing a cheap assistant, add that time at your own rate. Our [hourly rate calculator](https://peachtreeva.multisites.ai/tools-and-resources/hourly-rate-calculator) shows what your own hour is worth.

## What does the time zone change?

Time zone decides how fast things move. A U.S.-based assistant working in your hours can answer a client at 10 a.m. the same day. An assistant 10 hours ahead may answer overnight, which helps for research and hurts for urgent scheduling.

Offshore wins here in one case: you want work done while you sleep. You send a list at 6 p.m. and read finished results at 7 a.m. That suits batch work. It does not suit a calendar that changes by the hour.

Peachtree VAs work Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., in your preferred time zone. We do not offer overnight coverage.

## What about communication and quality?

Communication risk is about nuance, not intelligence. A client email needs the right tone, idiom and context. A U.S.-based assistant reads these cues natively. An offshore assistant can learn them, but expect a longer ramp.

Quality depends more on vetting and fit than on location. Ask any provider:

1. How many interview and test stages does each assistant pass?
2. Is there a background check, and who runs it?
3. Do assistants sign a [non-disclosure agreement](https://peachtreeva.multisites.ai/glossary/non-disclosure-agreement)?
4. What happens if the match is wrong?

At Peachtree, every assistant clears multi-stage interviews, skills assessments, reference checks and background checks. Each signs an NDA. If a match does not fit, our [matching guarantee](https://peachtreeva.multisites.ai/glossary/matching-guarantee) means we rematch at no extra cost.

## What are the risks of each choice?

Each model has a different risk. Offshore carries more risk from time-zone gaps, tone mismatches and cross-border enforcement. U.S.-based carries a higher price and, with some providers, a minimum number of hours you must buy.

Do not assume location equals security. Whichever route you pick, [give access safely](https://peachtreeva.multisites.ai/guides/give-a-virtual-assistant-access-safely): separate logins, a password manager, least access and a written [standard operating procedure](https://peachtreeva.multisites.ai/glossary/standard-operating-procedure) for sensitive tasks.

## Which should you choose?

Use the work to decide. Pick offshore for batch tasks you can review later. Pick U.S.-based for client contact, calendar changes and judgment calls. Many owners split the work: a U.S.-based assistant for the front office and cheap help for research.

- **Choose offshore if** the task has clear steps, a review step and no live deadline.
- **Choose U.S.-based if** a missed reply costs you a client or a meeting.
- **Not sure?** Run your task list through our [delegation matrix](https://peachtreeva.multisites.ai/tools-and-resources/delegation-matrix), then read [5 reasons to hire a U.S.-based virtual assistant](https://peachtreeva.multisites.ai/5-reasons-to-hire-a-us-based-virtual-assistant).

## Can you mix both models?

Yes, and many owners do. Use a U.S.-based assistant for the work that touches clients and your calendar. Use lower-cost help for research, lists and batch tasks. The trick is a clear handoff between the two.

A hybrid works when you follow these rules:

1. **One owner per task.** Never let two assistants share the same inbox or calendar.
2. **Written steps.** Each batch task has a short [standard operating procedure](https://peachtreeva.multisites.ai/glossary/standard-operating-procedure).
3. **A review point.** The U.S.-based assistant, or you, checks batch output before it reaches a client.
4. **Limited access.** Give each person only the tools they need.

## What should you test before you commit?

Run a short trial with a real task. Pick a task that matters but carries low risk. Time how long it takes you to explain, how many fixes it needs and how quickly replies arrive.

Score each option on four points: quality of the first draft, speed of replies in your hours, how well the assistant handles a surprise and how much of your time it took. Pick the option that wins on the points that matter for your work, not only on price. ## Frequently asked questions

### Is an offshore virtual assistant cheaper than a U.S.-based one?

Usually yes. Wing Assistant lists offshore part-time help at $699 a month for 80 hours, about $8.74 an hour. Published U.S. plans at Time Etc run $36 to $39 an hour (October 2026). The gap is real, but check management time, rework and hours lost to time-zone gaps before you call it savings.

### When does an offshore virtual assistant make sense?

Offshore help fits well-defined, repeatable tasks such as data entry, research, list building and after-hours coverage. It works best when you can write clear steps and review output on your own schedule. It fits less well when the work needs live client contact.

### When is a U.S.-based assistant the better choice?

Choose U.S.-based when the work needs same-day back-and-forth, client-facing phone or email, calendar changes in your time zone, or knowledge of U.S. business norms. It also helps when your contracts or clients expect U.S.-based handling of their information.

### Are Peachtree VA assistants offshore?

No. Peachtree VA assistants and bookkeepers are based in the United States. Each one clears multi-stage interviews, skills assessments, reference checks and background checks, and signs an NDA before seeing your business.
